Training as a Container and Equipment Builder (m/f/d)

Ob single component or complete solution, we at Sommer & Strassburger GmbH specialize in the customer-specific processing of stainless steel, mainly for the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries. Our extensive range of services and products includes, among other things, plant construction, process containers, membrane housings, filter housings, heat exchangers, pipe branchings, and special fabrications.

Are you looking for a varied apprenticeship? We offer interested students (m/f/d) future-proof professions. The apprenticeship duration is 3.5 years.

Your tasks with us are:

Container and apparatus builders manufacture boilers and pressure-resistant reaction vessels for process engineering and the food and beverage industry. Heat exchangers or turbine housings for energy and supply technology are also among the manufactured products. First, they mark out sheets and profiles based on technical drawings, then deform them by hand or by machine and finally assemble them into components or groups. They mount these on-site using detachable and non-detachable connections to form entire systems or plants and install pipelines, connections, and fittings. Finally, they check the tightness of the systems and verify whether, for example, weld seams and other connections have been executed correctly. In addition, they maintain and repair systems, containers, and apparatus.

Container and apparatus builders manufacture components and groups for containers, apparatus, and pipelines from stainless steel and other metals. They assemble these into systems or plants, check their functionality, and maintain them.

They build containers and apparatus for companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, or energy technology industry. From copper, other non-ferrous metals or stainless, special steel alloys, they create, for example, brewery kettles, pressure tanks, centrifuges, steam generators, or heat and cold exchangers.

In the container and apparatus construction operation, the specialists have their hands full: A company is planning the construction of a production plant for lubricants and sealing materials and has commissioned the manufacture of several large containers for this purpose. Before starting the work order, container and apparatus builders study the construction and assembly documents and prepare the necessary sheets, profiles, and other semi-finished products in the workshop. They need to be able to handle heavy lifting because the metal parts are heavy. To avoid injuries in accidents, they wear safety shoes with steel caps. Before cutting, they measure the sheets or profiles and mark them, for example, using a template. They adhere exactly to the specifications – after all, the parts must later be assembled precisely. Then they cut the semi-finished products to size. When working on cutting systems, container and apparatus builders wear hearing protection and safety glasses.

Now the metal parts are deformed warm or cold, e.g., by bending, pressing, rolling, deep drawing, or straightening, and then edged. Punching may also be applied. For these operations, container and apparatus builders use CNC-controlled machines or rely on their manual skills. Finally, they weld the individual parts into assemblies. Protective clothing is also required when welding. They pay close attention to assembling the often complex welding constructions without distortion. Is the dimensional accuracy correct? Since the individual assemblies and apparatus are usually part of larger systems, the connection dimensions must be precisely determined and adhered to. Sometimes container and apparatus builders also connect parts by soldering or riveting. Additionally, they install pipe connection nozzles and attach fittings or measuring and control devices. Here, too, precise work is the top priority.
